When her uncle Mordecai spoke these words to Queen Esther, he was challenging her to use her voice and her power to save her people who were about to be destroyed by a tyrant. The Purim story, told of events 2,500 years ago, was celebrated this week by Jewish people around the world. It is a story of tragedy and triumph, of a people threatened with destruction by the despotic leader of an empire, and of the courage of one woman who changed history. The Purim story speaks to events in Ukraine right now and challenges us to see how we, too, might use our power and our voices to affect events unfolding in Europe and around the world.
