Led by Yvelyne & Henry Germain-McCarthy
Yvelyne and Henry have been active members of First UU Church of New Orleans for 40+ years. They are delighted to return to the NSUUS pulpit to share how they live our UU values of justice, generosity, and interdependence.
For decades, they have worked to increase access to learning for children and young adults in Haiti, one of our nearby neighbor nations and a country that has no public education system. This lack of a national educational investment has life-long negative impacts on its citizens’ opportunities, who are eager to be educated and improve their quality of life.
Henry and Yvelyne have made a commitment to build a free primary school in Yvelyne’s first hometown of Riviere Froide, a very needy area near Port-au-Prince. They work with local partners as well as a Haitian-led non-profit that serves as their fiscal agent and umbrella organization (www.AHDHhaiti.org).
Their presentation will describe and show videos of the origins and progress of building the new schooland their plans for making it sustainably free. Join us at the service for an affirmation of Haitians’ hard-working ethic that keeps them hopeful and resilient, a lesson worth learning and supporting.
